Leprosy Services

The Institute for Specialized Services in Leprosy (INSSIL) was started in February 2015, and all investigations related to diagnosing and managing leprosy are regularly carried out. Services include skin smears, skin biopsies, ultrasonography of nerves, management of reactions, care of ulcers, and physiotherapy.
Latha works as a housekeeper/helper in many homes to earn money. She was devastated when she was diagnosed with leprosy. The treatment caused her skin color to change, and she stayed at home, experiencing self-stigma. With much counseling, she completed her treatment and was relieved that there were no other physical problems. After her treatment, she resumed working in the homes, as her employers called her back, saying, “If you have completed your treatment, please come back; we are missing you.” She is presently working and has been released from treatment.
